Aspers Casino Westfield, Stratford City
Whilst we’re going to look at the casinos in alphabetical order, it is handy that the first one we can tell you about is also one of the most interesting. The Aspers Casinos located at the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford was one of the country’s first ‘super casinos’, taking up 65,000 square foot of space. Not only will you be able to place a huge number of different bets here, you’ll also be able to have a bite to eat and a drink if either of those things appeal. Arguably the best thing about this casino is the large number of tables on offer, promising a good number of games.
Crockfords Casino
There are a few casinos located in Mayfair, with Crockfords being one of the best-known. William Crockford opened it in 1828, with the idea being that it would be a prestigious private gaming club. In fact, it is the oldest such venue in the world, also being one of London’s most exclusive locations. The range of games on offer is impressive, but you might be surprised at what else you can get. Crown London Aspinalls
In the 1960s, John Aspinall decided to create Aspinall’s Club. His enthusiasm was contagious, leading to some of the best private gaming parties in the country taking place in his chosen venue. Its name has changed over the years, with the modern location being known as Crown Aspinalls Casino. Located in Mayfair, there is a restaurant as part of the building to allow punters to get a bite to eat between games. Whether you want to enjoy traditional gambling or opt for something like a poker tournament, one of London’s most prestigious private members clubs has you covered.
Empire Casino
If you’re looking for a conveniently located casino then you’re not going to do much better than Empire’s, which is just a stone’s throw from Leicester Square. In spite of how centrally located it is, there is still some calm to be found in the storm of this generally quite quiet venue. It is does exactly what you’d want a central London casino to do, though, catering to pretty much every type of audience. That includes those that wish to enjoy a VIP experience, so don’t be surprised if you see some high-rollers wandering around alongside tourists popping in for the day.
Genting Casino Chinatown London
The main reason you’re likely to head to Chinatown is if you’re looking for a tasty bite to eat, but the Genting Casino offers another experience for those that want to get away from the noise and the smells of the area. It promises some of the best gaming in the city, alongside some of the lesser-known table options that aim to cater for the local crowd. If you’re hoping to try to increase your bankroll then you’ll want to have a look at the slots, which often promise large jackpots, but it isn’t where the majority of the action is likely to be, with most preferring the roulette table.
Forty Five Kensington
Forty Five Kensington is a mix between the casinos of old and the modern-look variety. That is thanks to the likes of the e-lounge, which promises state-of-the-art machines for digital gaming. In the casino proper you can play different types of roulette, as well as baccarat, blackjack and other fun table games. The Queensberry Room is where you’ll want to head if you’re planning on playing some high stakes games, but it is fair to say that entry into it isn’t open to everyone, so don’t be upset if you get turned away.
Grosvenor Casino Barracuda
There is an argument that this might be the best casino in London, in spite of the fact that it is, in essence, a chain venue. The table games are exactly what you’d expect, offering the likes of roulette, blackjack and three card poker, plus there is a good selection of slot machines. What puts this high on the list is the fact that it’s got a brilliant private games room and all of the glitz and glamour that you could hope for. It is perhaps the fact that it is so different from other casinos that all tend to fit the same brief that helps it to stand out from the crowd and make it worth a look.
Grosvenor Casino Gloucester Road
Whilst there is nothing to complain about when it comes to the Grosvenor Casino on Gloucester Road, there isn’t much to write home about either. You can get a few nice bites to eat in the restaurant, up to and including afternoon tea, but the casino itself doesn’t offer anything particularly out of the ordinary. It is all about the table games, with live options on offer pretty irrespective of when you choose to head there. Add in some decent slots and you can see why it is that so many people have enjoyed heading here, even if it doesn’t stand out from the crowd.
Grosvenor Casino Bayswater
The problem with chain casinos is that they don’t tend to be able to offer much to help set them apart from other venues in the same chain. That is what helps the Barracuda Grosvenor stand out and also what stops the Bayswater venue from doing so. That isn’t to say it isn’t worth visiting, just that you’re unlikely to experience much here that you wouldn’t have experienced at any of the other members of the Grosvenor family. You’ll get all of the usual table games and slot machines, though, so there certainly isn’t anything to complain about over a visit here.
Grosvenor Casino Piccadilly (The Rialto)
In terms of standing out from the crowd, there is nothing better than a central location to help you attract the visitors. The fact that Piccadilly Circus is usually so busy means that you shouldn’t be shocked to discover that the Grosvenor here tends to be popular with tourists and regular casino-goers alike. It is also helped in its popularity by the fact that it is set in a beautiful building, complete with impressive staircase and delightful architecture. There isn’t the best selection of games in the world, but when the casino looks as nice as this you’ll still want to visit.
Grosvenor Casino The Park Tower, London
If you’re heading to Knightsbridge, you should know what to expect and that is a top-end location for all of your gambling needs. The live games aren’t exactly numerous, but the dealers are great if you’re a little unsure what you’re doing. Set over two floors, the casino isn’t the biggest but you shouldn’t be surprised by that given how much the rent must costs for its location. There is a bar that overlooks the casino floor, should you decide that you’re not too bothered about betting and would rather watch other people do it instead.
Grosvenor Casino St Giles
If you’re the sort of person that doesn’t like a big and bustling venue then the member of the Grosvenor family located on Tottenham Court Road might well be for you. There are pillars and walls that stop the casino floor from being too open plan, which can either make it feel like you’re always avoiding things in order to place your bets or that it’s much quieter than other casinos appear to be. There is a good range of options for you in spite of how tight the entire place tends to feel. This is not only a solid option for people the like smaller places, but also ones with lower budgets.
Grosvenor Casino, The Victoria
The location of this Grosvenor Casino in Victoria means that it tends to cater more to tourists and the inexperienced than the seasoned veterans of the betting world. This is demonstrated in the manner in which the workers here are happy to talk anyone through the various games and bets that they can play and place. That isn’t to say that you won’t find people who like a flutter here, who tend to turn up often enough too. Rather just that if you’re looking for somewhere that promises a friendly and welcoming atmosphere then there are definitely worse places to go.
Les Ambassadeurs Club Mayfair
If you’re hoping to share your time at the casino tables with celebrities and members of the Royal Family, Les Ambassadeurs Club in Mayfair might just be where you’ll want to head. To give you a sense of what sort of thing to expect here, the casino was featured in Dr. No, the James Bond film. It does exactly what its name suggests it will, with a gaming room sitting alongside a smoking garden and even a library. In many ways this is more than just a casino, which is reflected in the fact that membership is exclusive and you’ll struggle to get on the list.
Maxims Casino Club Kensington
When you learn that Maxims Casino Club in Kensington is located inside the Palace Gate House building, you probably realise what sort of place it is. Those that turn up here are mostly wealthier people in a closed-circle of bettors who want to spend their money in a more impressive environment. With that in mind, the casino is joined on-site by a whiskey room and delightful restaurant, so you’re unlikely to be disappointed with any time spent here. Of course, the likelihood is that you’re not going to get to spend any time here, which is the real pity.
Horizons Casino
From one of the capital’s most exclusive casinos to one of those that pretty much everyone can head into, this Leicester Square venue used to be part of the Napoleons Casino chain but has now been rebranded to Horizons Casino. There are a decent number of different table games that you can get involved in, as well as a wealth of slots for you to choose from. There is a restaurant on-site and if you turn up on the right day and at the right time then you’ll get some food for free just by virtue of being there.
Metropolitan Casino Mayfair
Whilst no longer the Playboy Club, the Metropolitan Casino Mayfair offers plenty of action in the form of casino games and slots, as well as a fine dining restaurant and lounge bar for refreshments. There is also a gaming terrace if you fancy a bit of fresh air whilst gaming with private rooms available for the high rollers.
The Colony Club Casino
Is The Colony Club London’s most ‘stylish and contemporary casino’? That is how it describes itself, but it’s obviously up to each visitor to decide for themselves. The fact that there is a teppanyaki bar on-site alongside a glamorous bar area certainly suggests that the place is one that the young and fabulous might want to go. There is an exclusive gaming lounge for high-rollers, but the rest of the casino offers exactly what you’re likely to expect from any such venue anywhere in the world. That means the usual selection of table games and slot machines.
The Hippodrome Casino
Set over three different floors, the Hippodrome Casino has impressed people in the past, which you can tell by the fact that it was named Casino of the Year in 2013. Live games and slots are the main things you’ll come across at the casino, which is welcoming to people of every level. Set in a grand and beautiful building, you will often come across people looking for late night entertainment after performing in the West End alongside experienced casino visitors. There can be as many as 45 table games on offer, so you’re unlikely to be stuck for something to do here.
The Palm Beach Casino
The Palm Beach Casino was redecorated in order to make it one of the most glamorous casinos in London, which is saying something. Just because it is so impressive and located in Mayfair doesn’t mean that it’s snooty, though, which is demonstrated nicely by the likes of ‘Learn To Play’ sessions that are put on on a regular basis. That is a sign of the sport of friendly experience you can expect, with the dealers working hard to engage with customers and the staff lovely to deal with. The table games and slots are what you’d expect, but it is a pleasant casino to spend time in.
The Sportsman
In spite of the elegance and beauty of the Sportsman, it is a venue that is open to anyone. With a decent variety of live table games and plenty of slot machines to capture your attention, this is a casino that knows exactly how to cater to bettors without disappointing anyone. That means that the crowd is often mixed in nature, which means that you’re just as likely to be rubbing shoulders with a tourist as a high-roller. The good news is that there is a restaurant and bar on-site, so you’ll have plenty to do if you want to take a break from the gaming floor.
Park Lane Club Mayfair
Located in the heart of Mayfair inside the London Hilton on Park Lane, the Park Lane Club Mayfair has a lounge and bar, along with a gaming floor, gaming terrace, and private rooms. Classic table games include American Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat, and Three Card Poker, along with Unlimited Progressive Jackpots. They also offer Electronic Roulette and have 20 slot machines. The casino is run by Metropolitan Gaming, which includes the Empire Casino, Metropolitan Mayfair, and the Sportsman in London, along with a range of others across the UK and in Cairo.
Permanently Closed Casinos in London
The following casinos have permanently closed their doors and are no longer in operation:
Grosvenor Russell Square
The Grosvenor casino in Russell Square is no longer in operation, closing its doors in late 2022 after workers striked in order to negotiate higher wages to keep up with the cost of living crisis.
The Ritz Club London
The Ritz Club shut its doors in 2020 during the global health crisis and failed to re-open. The stark reality is that the club had not made a profit since 2016 due to regulation changes and a drop in wealthy foreign gamblers.
Golden Nugget Casino
The Golden Nugget Casino on Shaftesbury Avenue closed a while back and is no longer in operation.
Fox Poker Club
The Fox Poker Club, formerly located in Wingate House on the famous Shaftesbury Avenue, is also permanently closed and has been for some time now.
Temporarily Closed Casinos in London
The following casinos have temporarily closed their doors and are not currently in operation. If and when they re-open is yet to be seen.
Connoisseur Club Casino
The Connoisseur Club Casino was located within the Royal Garden Hotel on Kensington High Street next to Kensington Gardens. Whilst Google tells us that it is “temporarily” closed, there is no sign that it is re-opening with the website completely out of service. The hotel, however, is still very much in operation.
Clermont Club
The Clermont Club was a premier Mayfair casino club, which is “temporarily closed” at the moment with no indication of when it might re-open. It is not looking overly promising for the club, however, which already closed back from 2018 to 2022, quickly shutting its doors yet again.
